Abstract
Beer has a favourable impact on the overall mortality rate, coronary diseases, lipid and sugar metabolisms with no unfavourable effects on body weight, when it is consumed regularly and in moderate quantities. It is important to moderate these type of statements as alcohol abuse is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates and the effects of chronic or acute excessive alcohol consumption can be physical, psychological and social. Due to this risk of addiction, any statements concerning the effects of moderate and regular alcohol consumption must be made by health professionals and should in no case be used to incite non-drinkers to consume alcohol even in moderation. The risk of addiction does exist. It is best to recommend the consumption of an alcoholic beverage on a regular, moderate basis, at meal times and spread out evenly throughout the week.
