Abstract

Alcohol consumption is associated with a high incidence of morbidity and mortality. Cardio-protective effects have been observed, however, when alcohol intake is regular and moderate (lower than 30 g/day). This review discusses the mechanisms that are involved in this protective effect: effect on lipids, homocysteine, fibrinogen, platelet aggregation as well as the antioxidant effects of alcohol. These protective effects depend not only on the quantity but also on the way that alcohol is consumed. All types of beer and wine have protective effects against cardiovascular diseases. More specifically, vitamin B which is found in beer exerts its protective effect by lowering homocysteinemia.
