Abstract
This article gives a review on different patterns of alcohol use and how these patterns relate to health risk, with special emphasis on the difference between drinking too much alcohol and abuse/dependence. Stress, hypertonia, overweight, gastritis, diarrhoea, traumas from violence or accidents, sleeping disorders, problems with concentration, depression, anxiety, pregnancy, family related problems and interactions with medication are some common clinical situations where the issue of the patient's drinking habits should be considered. How to raise the subject within the timeframe of a normal consultation is discussed, as well as useful diagnostic and intervention tools.
