Abstract
Recently a bulk of scientific evidence associates the moderate alcohol drinking with reduced mortality from cardiovascular diseases among elderly and middle-aged people. Moderate intake of alcohol appears to outweigh any possible adverse affects of moderate drinking (Meister et al., 2000). The regular consumption of small amounts of alcohol is more healthful than the sporadic consumption of larger amounts of alcohol. On the other hand, for some individuals the risks of moderate alcohol intake outweigh any potential benefits. These indiduals are, e.g., persons with drug or alcohol dependence, pregnant woman, and those who are treated with medications that may interact adversely with alcohol (Meister et al., 2000). Some authors emphasize, that the epidemiological evidence does not necessarily mean that alcohol itself is responsible for the lower risk of coronary heart disease and describe lifestyle factors that might interfere with the role of alcohol (Weiss, 2001). The aim of this paper is to explain the term "moderate alcohol drinking" and to present basic information on this issue.
