Abstract
In the upper aerodigestive tract, local morphologic, metabolic and functional alterations are present due to alcohol consumption. Systemic effects of alcohol interact with local changes of the morphology and function of the salivary glands. Additionally, alcohol causes accumulation of pathologic bacteria within the mucosa, which leads to chronic infection. Susceptibility to carcinogens and cell proliferation in the mucosa are increased, resulting in genetic changes with the development of dysplasia, leucoplacia and carcinoma. Increased alcohol consumption correlates with increased risk of cancer and increased mortality in a doses-effect-relation.
