Abstract
Alcohol consumption is an important health determinant. Excessive acute or chronic consumption is a well recognized risk for many diseases modulated by individual factors. Several epidemiological studies give a new insight on the public health significance of moderate alcohol consumption. There is now good evidences that moderate and regular alcohol consumption is associated with reduced coronary risk and, perhaps, an improvement in cognitive function and bone mass. Are these benefits the consequence of a particular life style or more directly of alcohol consumption? The debate is open. However it seems already usefull to think about the opportunity of an optimal rather than a moderate consumption.
