Abstract
Epidemiological studies of alcohol consumption and misuse among the elderly reveal inconsistent results. In a representative sample of community and residential residents (75+) the pattern of alcohol consumption related to sociodemographic variables is investigated. In addition the difficulties, which arise in surveys about alcohol drinking, are discussed. The alcohol intake is much less in old age- and nursing homes compared to private households. The alcohol consumption declines with increasing age. Sex and family status, but not the professional achievement is related to the amount of drinking. The prevalence of heavy drinking is low among the oldest compared to younger ages.
